Student-Athlete Advising

Student-Athletes are not advised any differently than any other student in the University. However, student-athletes MUST check with the Assistant Director for Athletics (Mrs. April Wines, 219 Steele Center) before changing schedules, INCLUDING when dropping a course.

Student-Athletes and their advisors need to be aware of special rules and guidelines that apply to student-athletes relative to their eligibility. The following information will provide much of that information. If you have a question, contact Mrs. April Wines, 219 Steele Center, x4645.

NCAA Continuing Eligibility Rules: To remain eligible to compete and practice in NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics, High Point student-athletes must achieve the following minimum academic requirements.  They are in addition to the High Point University Academic Good Standing requirements for continuing eligibility.  Please familiarize yourself with these requirements to assist your student-athlete advisees.

  • A student-athlete has five calendar years in which to complete his or her four seasons of competition.
  • This five year "clock" begins during the semester in which the student-athlete first enrolls in a minimum full-time program of studies in a collegiate institution and it stops only under special circumstances (e.g., military service, medical hardship, official church missions).
  • Undergraduate student-athletes must be enrolled as a full-time student in a minimum of 12 hours during the semester to practice or compete.
  • Graduate student-athletes must be enrolled as a full-time student, as defined by the Office of Graduate Studies, but in no fewer than 8 hours during the semester to practice or compete.

Entering any new semester, ALL student-athletes, including those currently enrolled and graduate students must:

  • Complete 6 hours of academic credit during the preceding regular full-time academic term.

For those who enrolled full-time at a collegiate institution on or after August 1, 2003:

Entering any new academic year, a student-athlete must:

  • Complete 18 hours of academic credit during the preceding regular academic year or the two previous regular semesters.

Hours earned from repeated courses with an initial grade above an F do not count toward the above NCAA 18 hour-rule.

Entering the second year of collegiate enrollment, a student-athlete must:

  • Complete 24 hours of academic credit (Summer school credit hours may be used to satisfy the 24-credit-hour requirement provided 18 hours are earned during the regular academic year);* and
  • Have a 1.80 cumulative GPA (90% of the minimum cumulative GPA necessary for graduation).*

Entering the third year of collegiate enrollment, a student-athlete must:

  • Complete 50 hours of academic credit (40% of the degree program);*
  • Have a 1.90 cumulative GPA (95% of the minimum cumulative GPA necessary for graduation);** and
  • Officially declare a major.

Entering the fourth year of collegiate enrollment, a student-athlete must:

  • Complete 75  hours of academic credit (60% of the degree program);* and
  • Have a 2.00 cumulative GPA (100% of the minimum cumulative GPA necessary for graduation).**

Entering the fifth year of collegiate enrollment, a student-athlete must:

  • Complete 100 hours of academic credit (80% of the degree program);* and
  • Have a 2.00 cumulative GPA (100% of the minimum cumulative GPA necessary for graduation).**

Clarifications on the Continuing Eligibility Rules for those who enrolled full-time at a collegiate institution on or after August 1, 2003

*Part-Time Enrollment

  • A student-athlete is responsible to earn 18 hours in any academic year in which the student-athlete was full time during one or more terms.  Part-time hours may be used to fulfill this requirement.
  • Exception: A student-athlete who enrolls in his or her first full-time term of collegiate enrollment following the fall term will not be responsible for earning 18 hours until he or she has spent a full academic year at the institution.
  • The degree program requirements shall be determined on the basis of the student's academic record in existence at the beginning of that student's second or subsequent academic year (i.e., third semester) of full-time enrollment.

** Term by Term GPA Certification

  • Unlike the 40/60/80 degree program requirements which are certified every fall, the GPA requirement is certified after every term.  A student-athlete's GPA will be determined on the basis of the student's academic record in existence by the first date of competition of each regular term of an academic year beginning with that student's second or subsequent academic year (i.e., third semester) of full-time enrollment.
  • If the student-athlete is ineligible under the provisions of the satisfactory-progress legislation at the beginning of that term, eligibility may be reinstated at the beginning of any other regular term of that student's specific academic year, based upon the student's subsequent fulfillment of the minimum grade-point average requirement.

Summer Credit Hours

  • Summer credit hours may be used to satisfy the 24-credit-hour requirement when certifying a student-athlete entering his or her second year of collegiate enrollment.  Summer hours may also be used to meet the 40/60/80-percent-of-degree requirements.

Transfers

  • A midyear transfer is subject to the above requirements and is able to use transferable degree credits to satisfy the requirements.
  • A transfer student-athlete (foreign or domestic) who initially enrolls as a full-time student in any collegiate institution's regular academic term on or after August 1, 2003, will be subject to the academic requirements set forth above.
