CRLA Tutor Certification
In the year 2001, the Academic Services Center at High Point University became the fourth institution of higher learning in North Carolina to receive College Reading & Learning Associations (CRLA) Level III Mastery Level Certification. The ASC program is certified through June 2010.
The purpose of tutor training is two-fold. First, it provides recognition and positive reinforcement for tutors' successful work. Second, the CRLA certification process sets a standard of skills and training for tutors. There are three levels of certification:
- Regular: A minimum of ten hours of tutor training and 25 actual tutoring hours.
- Advanced: An additional ten hours of training and an additional 25 actual tutoring hours.
- Mastery: A total of thirty hours of tutor training and 75 actual tutoring hours.
Training topics include the following in addition to others not listed: Tutor Reponsibilities, Tutoring Ethics, Communication and Listening Skills, Learning Styles, Assertiveness, and Group Management Skills.
