Art Education

Welcome to the High Point UniversityArt Education Webpage!

The Art licensure (K-12) candidate earns a B.A. undergraduate degree in studio art at High Point University.  The program focuses on opportunities for the candidate to broaden and deepen their skills, knowledge and insight into the content of art.   A well-rounded curriculum that includes drawing, design, crafts, ceramics, painting, sculpture, photography and printmaking allows the candidate to experience seven types of studio courses.   Observation and representation is an important part of the philosophy of teaching studio art at High Point University.  It is based on the idea that if a candidate has the skills to represent a subject, they will have a good foundation for further artistic pursuits in any category or style of Art.  Criticism or the act of seeing art with the knowledge of the principles and elements of design is continuously explored in introductory and advanced classes, studio, art history and art education classes. The practice of creativity using higher order thinking is encouraged in the studio classes. This includes critiques and the study of master works evidenced in research and discussion in the art history classes.
