In keeping with the philosophy behind a strong liberal arts education, every undergraduate student must meet a set of general education requirements in addition to the many courses specific to a students' major. It is these background courses that serve as the foundation upon which a solid education in any academic major is based.

Freshman Year - Thematic Focus: Self and Society

The following requirements must be met during the first year of study.

Western Civilization (3 hours)
HST 101 Western Civilization to the Enlightenment
HST 102 Western Civilization since the Enlightenment

Writing Techniques (3 hours)
ENG 102 Composition
(Note: Some students will be placed in ENG 101 if placement scores require it. Furthermore, a writing assessment exam is given at the end of ENG 102. Students not achieving a satisfactory score must take ENG 104

Fine Arts (3 hours)

ART 120 Human Dimensions of Art
MUS 120 Human Dimensions of Music

Mathematics (3 hours)
MTH 131 Finite Mathematics (or higher)
(Note: Some students are required to take MTH 105 as a prerequisite to a higher level of Mathematics when placement scores mandate such. Students should take the highest level of math for which they qualify.)

Reading
First year students must demonstrate proficiency in reading through a reading comprehension exam. Students failing to achieve an acceptable score must take a reading course.

The following requirements can be met during the freshman or sophomore year.

Religion (3 hours)
Any three hour 100 or 200 level course (with the exception of REL 205, REL/PHL 209, and REL/PHL 216).

Physical Education (2 hours)
PE 105 Foundations of Wellness and one activity course.
(Note: PE 106 Health, Nutrition and Physical Fitness is used to meet this requirement in the Evening Degree Program.)
(Credit cannot be earned in both PEC 105 and PEC 106)

Science (4 hours)
One course in laboratory science.
(AST 121, BIO 110, BIO 111, CHM 121, NSC 111, or NSC 112 recommended for students needing to meet only the basic laboratory science requirement. (Students needing additional science courses for requirements in their major should take BIO 130, CHM 101, PHY 211 or PHY 221 as appropriate to meet this requirement.)

Modern Foreign Language (6 hours)
Students must complete six semester hours in the same language (French, German, or Spanish) if beginning at level of 202 or below. Students beginning above the level of 202 must complete three semester hours in French, German, or Spanish. (Note: Non-native speakers of English may be exempt from the modern foreign language requirement upon demonstration of proficiency in English.)

Sophomore Year - Thematic Focus: Self and Society
