B.S. Home Furnishings – Program Overview

B.S. Home Furnishings – Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Home Furnishings is part of the Knabusch-Shoemaker School of Home Furnishings and Design. For almost 30 years the Bachelor of Science in Home Furnishings at High Point University has been successfully training students for marketing and management positions with home furnishings manufacturers, home furnishings suppliers, or furniture retailers. This major requires students to take general business, marketing, and communications courses, as well as industry-specific courses.

In 2012, the faculty had an opportunity to update the Home Furnishings curriculum so as to continue to respond to industry needs. The result is two new degrees: Visual Merchandising Design and Furnishings/Product Development and Design. Fall 2013 begins the phase-out of the old curriculum and we will not be accepting any new freshmen in this program from that point onward. We encourage students interested in Home Furnishings to consider the Visual Merchandise degree (launching Fall 2013) or the Furnishings/Product Development and Design degree (launching Fall 2014).

The city of High Point is home to the largest Home Furnishings Market in the world, held twice a year. Over 75,000 attend each market and over 2,400 firms exhibit their products in over 160 showroom buildings comprising almost 10 million square feet of display space. Approximately 50% of the wood and 35% of the upholstered household furniture in the U.S. is sold by companies within easy driving distance of High Point.

Our location offers students opportunities for field trips to see the industry in action; internships to gain real world experience and academic credit at the same time; exposure to guest speakers who regularly address classes on their areas of expertise; and part time work at the furniture market and with furniture-related businesses gives valuable learning experiences.

Upon completion of their degree, graduates with a B.S. in Home Furnishings should:

  • have a good understanding of home furnishings products and the home furnishings industry.
  • understand brand management as it relates to companies marketing and distributing home furnishings products.
  • know the normal channels of distribution for home furnishings products and be able to help create efficient supply chain organizations.
  • know the factors involved in merchandising products on the manufacturer/supplier level.
  • know the factors involved in merchandising products in both in-store and non-store retailing.
