Semester Long Opportunities

Our institution is in a consortium with the Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy. Art and Graphic Design Students are encouraged to attend this program as it is aligned with our curriculum. More information and application forms are available through HPU’s study abroad office.

Interior Design and Visual Merchandising Design majors can partner with Lorenzo di Medici School in Florence during the spring semester of the junior year.

Grand Tour of Italy

Follow in the footsteps of young artists who have historically honed their craft by visiting relevant sites in Italy and the rest of Europe. Work on-site on a series of studio projects in Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Siena, Venice, and other cities across Italy. Research specific works of art and architecture, then confront them face-to-face on this highly experiential and hands-on tour of Italy.

Find inspiration in the “City of Light”, Paris, France! See Paris through the lens of a camera and see what inspired the famous photographer of Paris, Eugène Atget. While you are there you’ll experience and photograph the Paris streetscape, see the city from the Eiffel Tower, and explore the Palace of Versailles! This course fulfills the Art Studio requirement and the Global Studies Requirement.

Program Highlights

  • Learn to photograph one of Europe’s most famous cities
  • Climb the steps of Notre Dame
  • Experience Paris from a different perspective during a boat ride on the River Seine
  • Get a bird’s eye view of the city from the top of the Eiffel Tower

Course Title: A Tale of 3 Cities: Retail Design & Merchandising in NY, London, & Paris

Prerequisite: VMD major or minor, INT major, FMD minor. Equivalency: Junior standing

Study about and visit the iconic world fashion and retailing capitals of New York, London, & Paris.  During the semester students will study historic store types, displays, fixtures, visual merchandising design techniques, and fashion merchandising as practiced by leading department stores, boutiques, bespoken retailers, and haute couture fashion houses in the 3 renowned centers of global retailing and high fashion. The travel components to New York City, London, England, and Paris, France, will allow students to observe and analyze cultural and shopping similarities and differences in all 3 locations, and immerse themselves in unique environments and shopping experiences of stand-alone department stores in each city including: Bergdorf Goodman, Macy’s 5th Ave., Gucci, Harrods, Selfridges, “By the Queen’s Warrant” on Oxford St., Bon Marche, and haute couture design houses along the Champs Elysees including Dior, Givenchy, and more. If you adore shopping and fashion, and desire a career working with and inspired by beautiful and profitable global retailing locations, this amazing course is for you!
