Athletic Training Experiential Learning
Students studying athletic training at High Point University are afforded extraordinary experiential learning opportunities in a variety of health care settings. Our students develop proficiency in evidence-based clinical decision making under the supervision of board certified athletic trainers and physicians. Students have hands-on opportunities across the spectrum of healthcare provided by athletic trainers – from on-field injury assessment and emergency management through rehabilitation and return to participation. Our students gain valuable experience traveling with intercollegiate and interscholastic athletic teams affording them a real world perspective on the challenges of functioning within a sports medicine team. Students gain an average of 20 hours per week of patient care experience while concurrently completing coursework in the domains of athletic training. This approach to education allows for synergy and assimilation of information as students learn in the classroom and laboratory settings and have the opportunity for immediate application in the clinical patient care setting.
Clinical Education Guidelines
The HPU clinical education plan follows the guidelines set forth in the CAATE “Standards and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Athletic Trainer” (http://www.caate.net ). Clinical Rotation Assignments
The athletic training faculty and clinical preceptors collectively determine the clinical rotation assignments for all students. Rotations for first year students are determined during the summer semester. Subsequent rotation assignments are determined during the semester prior to the rotation.
The Department of Athletic Training is fortunate to have clinical affiliation contracts with the following entities in order to afford our students the most comprehensive clinical experience possible. Through the extensive network of clinical placements students gain experience in making healthcare decisions for patients with varying physical activity levels across the lifespan.
