B.A. Biology – Degree Requirements

The Biology Department offers both a Bachelor of Arts (B. A.) and a Bachelor of Science (B. S.) Degree in Biology. In addition to the Biology Department Degree Requirements students must meet the Degree Requirements of the University. All official Degree Requirements are specified in the High Point University Undergraduate Bulletin which serves as the student’s “Catalog of Record”. For more information please see Academics on the High Point University Website or visit the University Registrar’s Office in Roberts Hall (campus map)Students seeking the BA in Biology will receive a solid foundation in Biology and the basic foundations in Chemistry and Math. The BA Track will allow considerable flexibility for students to take courses of study to meet specific career goals. Graduates with the BA can expect to find careers in biology teaching, pharmaceutical or technical sales, science writing, science museum work, laboratory positions, quality control, and a professional school.(Refer to the Pre-Professional Programs section of High Point University University Undergraduate Bulletin for pre-professional requirements.)

Core Courses (16 credits) - All students who major in Biology will take the following core of courses (4 credits each):

  • BIO 1399. Introduction to Biological Principles and Literature*
  • BIO 2110. General Botany
  • BIO 2120. General Zoology
  • BIO 2130. Evolutionary Biology and Ecology
  • *Biology 1399 is prerequisite to all courses at the 2000 or higher level. Additional prerequisites are indicated in course descriptions.

Capstone Experience (2 credits) - can be met by completing one of the following:

  • BIO 4110 & BIO 4111. Undergraduate Research
  • BIO 4980. Biology Journal Club
  • BIO 4990. Senior Seminar
  • BIO 2130. Evolutionary Biology and Ecology
  • *Biology 1399 is prerequisite to all courses at the 2000 or higher level. Additional prerequisites are indicated in course descriptions.

Requirements for Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree (38 credits):

  1. Core Courses in Biology as required for all Biology Majors (16 credits).
  2. Capstone Experience as required for all Biology Majors (2 credits).
  3. Elective courses in Biology (8 credits) – Eight additional hours elected from:ENV 1120 – Issues in Environmental Science and/or
    Any Biology courses at the 3000 or 4000 level (see below)
  4. Required Supporting Courses (12 credits):General Chemistry I and II – Chemistry 1010 and 1011, and 1020 and 1021
    Pre calculus Algebra and Trigonometry – Math 1210

Students will be advised in electing additional courses that will complement their career goals.
