B.S. Biology – Degree Requirements

The Biology Department offers both a Bachelor of Arts (B. A.) and a Bachelor of Science (B. S.) Degree in Biology. In addition to the Biology Department Degree Requirements students must meet the Degree Requirements of the University. All official Degree Requirements are specified in the High Point University Undergraduate Bulletin which serves as the student’s “Catalog of Record”. For more information please see Academics on the High Point University Website or visit the University Registrar’s Office in Roberts Hall (campus map)Students seeking the BS in Biology will take courses in Biology and supporting areas that will provide sufficient depth to prepare them for success as professional biologists in graduate school, in education, in industry, and in professional schools (Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry, Veterinary medicine, and other health related fields.) (Refer to the Pre-Professional Programs section of High Point University University Undergraduate Bulletin for pre-professional requirements.)

Core Courses (16 credits) - All students who major in Biology will take the following core of courses (4 credits each):

  • BIO 1399. Introduction to Biological Principles and Literature*
  • BIO 2110. General Botany
  • BIO 2120. General Zoology
  • BIO 2130. Evolutionary Biology and Ecology
  • *Biology 1399 is prerequisite to all courses at the 2000 or higher level. Additional prerequisites are indicated in course descriptions.

Capstone Experience (2 credits) - can be met by completing one of the following:

  • BIO 4110 & BIO 4111. Undergraduate Research
  • BIO 4980. Biology Journal Club
  • BIO 4990. Senior Seminar
  • BIO 2130. Evolutionary Biology and Ecology
  • *Biology 1399 is prerequisite to all courses at the 2000 or higher level. Additional prerequisites are indicated in course descriptions.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science Degree (58 hours of Biology and supporting courses):

  1. Core Courses in Biology as required for all Biology Majors (16 credits).
  2. Capstone Experience as required for all Biology Majors (2 credits).
  3. Elective Courses in Biology at the 3000 and/or 4000 level (4 credits each, 16 credits total):BIO 3000 Cell Biology

    BIO 3050 Genetics
    BIO 3070 Vascular Plant Taxonomy
    BIO 3080 Vertebrate Natural History
    BIO 3210 Tools for Biotechnology
    BIO 3220 Parasitology
    BIO 3350 Emerging Infectious Diseases: A World Perspective
    BIO 4010 Animal Physiology
    BIO 4020 Ecological Plant Physiology
    BIO 4030 Developmental Biology
    BIO 4040 Ecology
    BIO 4050 Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy
    BIO 4060 Immunology
    BIO 4090 Molecular Biology
  4. Required Supporting Courses (24 credits):General Chemistry I and II – Chemistry 1010 and 1011, and 1020 and 1021
    Organic Chemistry I and II – Chemistry 2510 and 2011/2511, and 2520 and 2021/2521
    Calculus I – MTH 1410
    Statistics – STS 2020 or STS 3200
  5. Not Required But Strongly Recommended Courses:One year of Physics.
  6. Additional Courses:Students will be advised in electing additional courses that will complement their career goals.
