Jessica Sabath has been named assistant coach of the High Point University volleyball team, head coach Jason Oliver announced on Tuesday. Sabath played volleyball at Eastern Kentucky from 2003-06, where she was a first-team All-Ohio Valley Region selection and set the EKU record for career digs. Most recently, Sabath was assistant coach with the Kaepa Eastside Cleveland Juniors in Eastlake, Ohio.
“Jessica definitely brings a championship mentality, which is great,” said Oliver. “Her work ethic and desire to be a Division I coach are what brought her here and I’m comfortable with her drive and ability to connect with people, which will make her a successful assistant coach and help us win a Big South Championship. We are lucky to have Jessica here at High Point University.”
At Eastern Kentucky, Sabath made an immediate impact for coach Lori Duncan, leading the Colonels with 577 digs and ranking second on the team in kills in 2003. She was EKU’s Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman. The next season, Sabath helped lead Eastern Kentucky to the Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles, earning a berth to the NCAA Tournament. EKU posted a 27-5 overall and 15-1 OVC record that season. Sabath ranked second on the team with 428 digs.
In Sabath’s junior year, Eastern Kentucky repeated as OVC regular season champ and advanced to the conference championship game, posting a 23-7 overall record and 14-2 conference mark. Sabath ranked second on the team with 402 digs and third in offensive hits. Sabath finished her senior year of 2006 with 1354 kills and ranked second on the team with 495 digs. Her 1827 career digs were an Eastern Kentucky record and she was chosen first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference and team MVP.
Sabath earned her bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science from Eastern Kentucky in 2007 and earned her master’s degree in Sport Administration in 2008. While doing her graduate work, Sabath worked as a Student-Athlete Academic Advising Graduate Assistant in the EKU Athletic Department.
Sabath has extensive coaching experience, most recently as assistant coach with the Kaepa Eastside Cleveland Juniors, based in Eastlake, Ohio. She helped coach the 18 Elite team and her duties included practice planning, drills and skill work. She has coached camps at the high school, college and club levels, including work with sports camps at Ohio State University in 2008.
Originally from Kirtland, Ohio, Sabath was a four-year starter at Lake Catholic. She was a two-time All-Ohio first team selection and two-time league MVP. She led her team to a pair of Div. II state semifinal appearances and was a member of the academic honor roll all four years. She was Plain-Dealer and News-Herald Player of the Year in 2001-02.
