HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 11, 2009 ? Steven Sherrick, a junior majoring in marketing and finance at High Point University, spent his summer at the pool thanks to an exciting internship in New Jersey. During his internship experience, Sherrick was responsible for a corps of lifeguards.
“The most exciting part of this internship was the amount of responsibility I had,” Sherrick says. “I ran seven pools and had 80 lifeguards I had to schedule. Anytime there was something wrong with a pool or scheduling problems, it was my responsibility to take care of it. … I also did a lot of interacting with the public and handling complaints.”
Although Sherrick’s major is more geared to the business world, he says the internship taught him a lot about management and communication skills.
“These skills will be a big help in almost any job,” Sherrick says. “It also helped me to be part of a team, as two other supervisors and I worked together anytime we encountered a problem.”
