HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 29, 2009 – High Point University students in an environmental ethics class, led by Dr. Chris Franks, assistant professor of religion, will participate in two service projects through the Piedmont Environmental Center (PEC).
The first event is a ?Halloween Safari,? to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 29 and 30 at the PEC, located on Penny Road.
The annual PEC event gives kids and adults the chance to “meet the animals.” Guests are led down PEC trails in the evening, where they meet PEC staffers dressed as animals who tell about their lives in the woods. The event includes snacks, a campfire and live music. HPU students will be assisting in many different aspects of the event.
The second civic engagement event is a “Kayak Tour of Belews Lake,” to be held on Nov. 15. Dick Thomas, the director of the PEC, will lead HPU students on an ecological tour of Belews Lake by kayak. There, students will have the opportunity to learn the rich history of the lake ? a power plant lake with a very interesting ecological history – while witnessing the ongoing environmental issues first-hand.
