HPU Students To Ring Closing Bell At NYSE

10.9.2009

HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 9, 2009 – Several business and finance students at High Point University will be on-hand to help close business for the day at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Monday, Oct. 12 – they’ll be ringing the closing bell.

Participating in the event, which will be held at 4 p.m. at the New York Stock Exchange, are 10 students, including Andrew Realon, president of the Student Government Association, as well as Dr. Nido Qubein, president of HPU; Dr. Dennis Carroll, provost and vice president for academic affairs; Chris Dudley, vice president for administration; Dr. Jim Wehrley, dean of the Earl N. Phillips School of Business; Dr. Stephanie Crofton, associate dean of the Earl N. Phillips School of Business; Dr. Alberta Herron, dean of the Norcross Graduate School; and Marsha Slane, chair of the HPU Board of Trustees.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for HPU,” Carroll says. “The students selected are business administration undergraduate majors and MBA students in our graduate program. They all have backgrounds in finance and economics, so they fully understand the world financial situation, and most definitely understand the significance of Wall Street.”

The Trading Floor bell – one of the most familiar features at the NYSE, with its loud, distinctive ring that echoes throughout the four trading areas – is part of the heritage of the NYSE, and it is considered an honor to be invited to ring “The Opening Bell” or “The Closing Bell.” In fact, many listed companies make a bell event part of their important product launches.

“For these students to be able to say that they have ‘rung the bell’ on Wall Street is incredible, and will no doubt be one of the most memorable events of their experience at High Point University,” Carroll adds.

Students will have a memento of the event as well; the bell ringing will be available in many forms of multimedia, including a photo of the event – which will be sent to the Associated Press, Reuters and Bloomberg. It will also go on the NYSE Web site, as well as the HPU Web site.

The event will also air live on nyse.com, and live to the jumbo screen on the W Hotel in Times Square. The event will be available to watch online at: http://www.nyse.com/attachment/liveflashbell.htm.

Following the event, the bell ringing will be available via online archive at: http://www.nyse.com/events/Cal_1194896449818.html.

The bell ringing will also be included on Facebook, at http://tinyurl.com/NYSE-Euronext-Facebook, Twitter, at http://twitter.com/NYSE_Euronext and YOU TUBE.
