HPU Interior Design Program Ranked Among Top 10 In Country

HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 18, 2010 – The Interior Design Program at High Point University has recently been ranked as one of the top 10 undergraduate design programs in the country by “DesignIntelligence” journal.

The rankings were part of the 11th annual “America’s Best Architectural & Design Schools” study, which ranked accredited undergraduate and graduate programs from the perspective of leading practitioners and professionals who have had experience hiring and evaluating the performance of recent graduates.

“This ranking is a great illustration of the terrific instruction and practical real world experiences interior design majors at HPU have the opportunity to be a part of,” says Dr. Richard Parker, department chair of Marketing and Home Furnishings Design. “I am proud that faculty, students and alumni of the program have excelled to such a level.”

All told, 381 professional practices were included in the research ? which included some of the largest design firms in the United States. Those who conducted the research asked about many program-related issues, as well as the preparedness of graduates, program educators, how programs rate in teaching various skills and more. As a result of the research, firms determined which college and university programs have the best prepared students for professional practice.

Cathy Hillenbrand-Nowicki, coordinator of the interior design program, notes that the combination of talented and dedicated faculty with creative and motivated students equals an outstanding program that happens to be located in the furniture capital of the world.

“It’s not surprising that the rest of the world is taking notice,” Hillenbrand-Nowicki says.

“I believe this ranking is a clear indicator of the level of excellence in our program,” adds Dr. Elizabeth Dull, associate professor of design.
Likewise, Dr. Dennis Carroll, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, says the quality and intensity of the interior design program has prepared HPU graduates to enter into some of the top design firms in America.

“Next year, our interior design program will be a part of our new School of Design,” Carroll says. “This new school will give our interior design students and faculty even greater opportunities to forge relationships with the furniture market and the home furnishings industry.”

Other top schools on the list include: The University of Cincinnati, Pratt Institute, Kansas State University, Arizona State University, Cornell University, Drexel University, Oklahoma State University, University of Oklahoma, University of Oregon, Fashion Institute of Technology SUNY, New York School of Interior Design, Syracuse University, University of Texas at Austin and Woodbury University.
