HPU Sponsors Performance By North Carolina Symphony

Posted on February 12, 2010.

HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 12, 2010 ? More than 450 guests had the opportunity to enjoy the musical talent of the North Carolina Symphony, which performed at High Point University on Feb. 11 in the Pauline Theatre of the Hayworth Fine Arts Center.

This is the second time the group has performed on campus. The HPU-sponsored event serves as a gift to the community, and allows the general public to experience music at its finest ? providing not only a pleasant experience, but an educational one as well.

The North Carolina Symphony was organized in 1932 under the direction of Pulitzer traveling fellowship recipient and composer Lamar Stringfield. Under the 34-year leadership of Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Swalin, the group developed its grassroots emphasis on taking the orchestra to the people of North Carolina ? including places such as HPU. That tradition has continued every year since the 1943 “Horn Tootin’ Bill” was passed by the State Legislature.

Now in its 77th year, the North Carolina Symphony is a full-time, professional orchestra with 68 members under the leadership of Grant Llewellyn.

At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people.
