HPU Fraternity Pi Kappa Phi Hosts National 'Ban The "R" Word' Event

HIGH POINT, N.C., March 23, 2010 – Twenty students from High Point University recently volunteered to participate in a telethon on March 20 for the UNC-TV station in the Research Triangle Park near Raleigh. The telethon was part of the UNC-TV’s Festival 2010, an annual on-air fundraiser.

“We answered the telephones in the live studio as individuals called in to make their pledge or gift over the phone,” says Dr. Don Scarborough, vice president of community relations at HPU, who assisted the students on the trip. “After a short training session, students manned the telephones from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.”

Scarborough added that a number of the students who volunteered are communication majors, so the event gave them the opportunity to see behind the scenes of a major television station.

UNC-TV’s broadcast stretches across the entire state of North Carolina and into portions of South Carolina and Virginia, so the students were seen by many viewers.
