HIGH POINT, N.C., April 9, 2010 – High Point University elementary education majors are helping local students improve their reading skills this year through the “Book Buddies” and “Reading Tutors” programs.
The programs – organized by Dr. Debbie Linville, associate professor of education – are part of a partnership between the HPU School of Education and Montlieu Math and Science Academy.
Both programs were created to help reinforce the message of literacy in the classroom. “Book Buddies” and “Reading Tutors” allow HPU education majors to visit students once a week at Montlieu and help assist children from kindergarten to fifth grade in reading.
Each week, HPU tutors use ongoing reading assessments to inform their text selection and instructional decisions.
“Through these programs, HPU students are able to learn firsthand the importance of meeting children where they are, the value of ‘just right’ texts, and the significance of planning relevant instruction toward the goal of promoting lifelong, joyful, strategic readers,” says Linville.
