HPU Student Lands Internship With Department Of Justice

HIGH POINT, N.C., July 14, 2010 ? Ryan Brown, a rising senior majoring in mathematics and actuarial science with a minor in statistics at High Point University, is spending his summer interning as an office clerk in the finance department for the Department of Justice.

As part of his internship, Brown checks in travel vouchers from attorneys’ offices and legal divisions throughout the U.S. to reimburse and log travel expenses. Additionally, he reviews each individual’s personal bank account to certify that there are enough funds available for payment, as well as checks and logs travel vouchers that have been selected to be audited prior to the auditors receiving them.

“I have seen travel vouchers anywhere from West Virginia to Iraq,” says Brown.

He says that an interesting part of his internship has been seeing how issues, like the recent Gulf Coast oil spill, affect many different legal divisions, including the finance department.

“This has really been a great experience,” says Brown. “It has shown me what an auditor’s job entails here at the Department of Justice.”
