HPU Theatre Presents 'Our Town'

11.3.2010

HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 3, 2010 – High Point University Theatre will present “Our Town” in the Pauline Theatre of the Hayworth Fine Arts Center. The show will run Nov. 18 through Nov. 21; it is open to the public.

The production, directed by Ed Simpson, professor and chair of the Department of Theater at HPU, is described by Edward Albee as “the greatest American play ever written.”

Written by Thornton Wilder, the story of “Our Town” follows the small town of Grover’s Corners through three acts: Daily Life, Love and Marriage, and Death and Eternity. Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry and eventually – in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre – die.

“It is a rich, powerful and warmly human play,” Simpson says. “John Lahr of The New Yorker said, ‘Wilder’s unfashionable insistence on embracing wonders as well as woe is both gallant and exhilarating.'”

The production will feature DeAnna Hughes and David Mikaulay, both freshmen; Lauren Henkel and Turner Morehead, both sophomores; and Ben Brown, Briana Howard, Alex Mathis, Brian Sanders and Megan Santiago, all seniors.

The play will also feature guest artist Matt Giehl in the role of “The Stage Manager.” Giehl has worked professionally at theatres from New York City to Florida, performing in a number of leading roles, including “The Taming of the Shrew,” “King Lear,” ?Elephant Sighs,? ?The Glass Menagerie,? and more. Locally, he has performed with the NC Shakespeare Festival, Triad Stage, the Flatrock Playhouse, Broach Theatre, the Barn Dinner Theatre, Theatre Alliance and is a founding member of the improve troupe, ?Comedy Salad.? He has appeared in numerous commercials and independent films, including a featured role in “Body Count.” Giehl, who is a director as well, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Showtimes for the production are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18 through Saturday, Nov. 20; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for students and $3 for children 12 and under. Those interested in purchasing tickets may contact the HPU box office at Hayworth Fine Arts Center at 336-841-4673.
