HPU Theatre Presents 'True West'

Posted on January 24, 2011.

HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 24, 2011 – The High Point University Theatre will present “True West,” a play by Sam Shepard, in the Empty Space Theatre of the Old Student Center. The show will run Feb. 10 through Feb. 20.

The production ? headed up by Michael Kamtman, guest director – is an American classic that explores alternatives that might spring from the demented terrain of the California landscape. The play follows the two sons of a desert-dwelling alcoholic and suburban wanderer as they clash over a film script. One son ? Austin, the achiever, is working on a script he has sold to producer Saul Kimmer, when Lee ? the other son, a petty thief ? drops in. Lee pitches his own idea for a movie to Kimmer, who then wants Austin to junk his bleak, modern love story and write Lee?s trashy Western tale.

“At first, we see two brothers who live in completely different worlds and have different values and experiences,” Kamtman says. “What we soon realize is that each envies, in his own way, something about the other’s existence. The play takes place over a period of several days. By the last day ? when their mother unexpectedly returns from a trip ? each has made a significant transformation into the other. How this happens and what it all means is the story of the play.”

The play features senior Nathan Ruffin, junior Amanda Mayes, sophomore William Allison and freshman Jared Goldenberg. Production designers are Max Flicker, a senior, and Courtney Ziegler, a junior. Stage manager is Marisa Brown, a sophomore. Production designers include Ami Shupe, associate professor of theatre, and Daniel Horney, an HPU alumnus.

Showtimes for the production are 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 10 through Feb. 12, and Feb. 17 through Feb. 19; and 2 p.m. on Feb. 13 and Feb. 20.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for students and $3 for children 12 and under. Those interested in purchasing tickets may contact the HPU box office at Hayworth Fine Arts Center at 336-841-4673.
