HPU Business Professor Publishes Article in Business and Economics Journal

IGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 15, 2011 ? Dr. Steven Lifland, associate professor of finance in the Phillips School of Business at High Point University, recently published an article in the “Journal of Academy of Business and Economics,” a publication of the International Academy of Business and Economics.

The article, titled “The Competitive Effects of R&D:  Evidence from Intra-Industry Analysis,” investigates the market valuation of a company after an announcement of an expenditure in research and development as compared to the resulting valuation of their industry competitors.

“The article is timely given the emphasis on the role of technology in our economy,” Lifland says. “An interesting finding was that many firms, although not the first to innovate, were able to use the R&D of others in order to improve their own positions.”
