HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 2, 2011 – Junior guard Shay Shine of the High Point University men’s basketball team has been featured on ESPN SportsCenter’s top plays for the second time this season ? this time coming in at No. 2 with his dunk over 6-foot-10 forward Jay Reynolds in Tuesday night’s 69-62 win over Presbyterian College at the Millis Center.
Shine was previously featured as the No. 1 play when he dunked over 6-foot-10 center D.J. Cunningham of UNC Asheville in the Panthers’ victory over the Bulldogs on Dec. 4, 2010 at the Millis Center. That dunk was also the top play of the week and was featured on SportsNation and Winner’s Bracket. It has advanced to the finals of the Dunks of the Year Facebook campaign and was posted several times on YouTube, getting over 2.5 million views.
Shine scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds against Presbyterian College and is averaging 12.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He?s shooting a team-best 36.3 percent from three-point range and leads the Panthers with 1.5 steals per game. He joined HPU after two years at Iowa Western, where he was an All-Region selection.
High Point University has won its last two games, coming back from a 17-point deficit to beat Charleston Southern, 77-75, last Saturday at the Millis Center before beating Presbyterian College on Tuesday. HPU is 3-2 in its last five games (all in the Big South) and is 8-13 overall and 5-7 in league play. High Point is seventh in the league standings, but just one win behind third place.
High Point next plays on Saturday night when it hosts Radford at 7 p.m. at the Millis Center. The Panthers look to avenge a 64-59 loss on Jan. 8 in Radford, Va. Radford (5-17, 2-10 Big South) edged Winthrop, 67-66, on Tuesday night. To view Shine’s dunk click here.
