Professor of Communication Honored With Ruth Ridenhour Scholarly And Professional Achievment Award

05.16.2011

HIGH POINT, N.C., May 16, 2011 ? Dr. Kate Fowkes, professor of communication at High Point University, was recently presented with the annual Ruth Ridenhour Scholarly and Professional Achievement Award during the 2011 graduation ceremony.

?What an honor and a wonderful surprise,? says Fowkes. ?I wish to thank my lovely colleagues for the interest and support they have shown for my scholarship. Research and writing can be lonely tasks, but having interesting and interested peers makes a tremendous difference.?

Fowkes, who came to HPU in 1993 with degrees from Reed College and the University of Texas, was promoted to full professor of communication in 2006. She has been instrumental in developing HPU?s program in media and popular culture studies, and has been a consistent and prolific scholar in media studies, focusing on fantasy films.

?Dr. Fowkes is not only an outstanding teacher, but she is a brilliant scholar as well,? says Dr. Dennis Carroll, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. ?Her students clearly benefit from her scholarship as it informs her lectures, her presentations, and her mentoring relationships. She epitomizes the teacher-scholar.?
