Student Finds Prescription For Success With Internship At Rutgers Pharmacy Program

HIGH POINT, N.C., June 23, 2011 – Ashley Press, a rising senior majoring in chemistry with a minor in mathematics at High Point University, is spending the summer participating in the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy Pharmacology Fellowship Program in Piscataway, N.J.

Press, a native of Greensboro, was the only non-Rutgers student to gain acceptance into the program, and one of only three who are not in the Rutgers Pharmacy program. During the internship, she will be working in the Toxicology Department on cancerous cells and their reaction to pesticides.

She credits her coursework at HPU for preparing her for the projects she’s involved in at the fellowship program.

“In particular, my chemistry classes have helped me with the calculations I need to dilute samples and figure out concentrations in unknown samples,” says Press.

Press says the experience has given her insight into her future career plans.

“The program has already subjected me to many techniques and technology seen in the industry so that when I do become a pharmacist, I will be keen on the next up and coming drug,” Press adds.

After graduation, Press plans to attend pharmacy school.
