HIGH POINT, N.C., June 27, 2011 – Mary Funke, a rising junior at High Point University majoring in chemistry with a minor in math, is spending the summer conducting research as part of unique internship at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
Funke, who was chosen among 800 applicants, is one of just 28 students nationwide selected to participate in the Center for Material Research REU Internship program. Other students interning come from Princeton University, the University of California at Berkley, as well as Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
During the 10-week internship, Funke will conduct research in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. She will be studying the transistor interface to DNA and associated surface electrochemistry. At the conclusion, she will write a summary and give a presentation on what she learned during the experience.
“As a chemistry major, I was unsure about having a research project in an unfamiliar subject. However, with High Point’s education and my previous research, I have the foundation that I need to succeed,” says Funke. “I’m looking forward to returning to High Point and sharing my knowledge as well as my experiences with my peers and professors.”
