HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 2, 2011 – Tyler Lippard, a rising junior majoring in communication with a minor in sports management at High Point University, had a busy summer getting broadcast experience thanks to his internship in the sports department at WTVD, the ABC affiliate in Raleigh-Durham.
Lippard says he had the opportunity to edit film that appeared on the 6 and 11 p.m. news. Some of the film editing included coverage from the Stanley Cup, the World Cup, NASCAR events and the NBA Finals. He also joined the videographer on location at the ACC Baseball Tournament, as well as the Regional College World Series.
One of Lippard’s biggest projects included the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame Naismith Awards, held at the Progress Energy Center in Raleigh. He also attended the ACC Football Media Day in Pinehurst, N.C., where he assisted in a press conference of all the ACC football head coaches.
He says his courses at HPU really helped him during his internship experience. Previous communication courses such as studio production, audio production, mediated communication systems, and TV Texts and Contexts prepared him to work in a television studio environment.
“This internship has allowed me to put the skills I’ve learned at HPU into practice,” says Lippard. “Being a part of sports broadcasting has always been a dream of mine. This experience has given me clarity that I have selected the correct major and career path.”
