Students Answer the Call to Provide Presents to Local Children

HIGH POINT, N.C., Dec. 20, 2011 – When High Point University students learned that the Salvation Army had a need to fill Christmas stockings for local children who may not otherwise get gifts on Christmas day, they answered the call abundantly.

More than 150 students participated in the Stuff a Stocking Campaign by picking up a stocking from the Office of Student Life at HPU, filling it with toys and personal hygiene items and returning it to a drop-off location on campus. Many of the stockings were filled by student groups, such as the Men’s Lacrosse Team who collectively stuffed 20 stockings. All of the stockings were delivered to the Salvation Army on Dec. 14.

“We asked our students to help out, and we received a wonderful response,” says Gail Tuttle, vice president of Student Life. “Even during the busy days of final exams, our students answered the call to give back.”

This is one of numerous ways HPU students have given back to the local community during the holiday season, including holding a canned food drive, sending Christmas cards to troops stationed overseas, and hosting a Christmas party for several local children in need.

The Salvation Army’s Stuff a Stocking Campaign was sponsored in part by WFMY News 2 this year.
