'Clean Sweep' Event Collects Food, Clothing and Furniture for Local Nonprofits

HIGH POINT, N.C., May 11, 2012 – High Point University students emptied their dorms from top to bottom at the end of the academic year as part of the university’s annual “Clean Sweep” event, which collects items needed by local nonprofit organizations that provide assistance in the community.

The event collected more than 500 pounds of food for the United Way of Greater High Point’s 20th annual Postal Food Drive, which benefits 14 local food pantries. A two-ton U.S. Postal Service truck made a stop on campus to pick up the food.

Donations of furniture and gently used clothing were also collected at the event and given to West End Ministries in High Point.

HPU coordinates its “Clean Sweep” event as a way for students to give back at the end of the academic year. Throughout the year, the university contributes surplus food from its 12 dining locations on a weekly basis to Open Door Ministries through its Food Donation Program, and students volunteer more than 30,000 hours and raise more than $100,000 each year to help those in need. This is another way HPU students contribute to the surrounding area.

“HPU students are always eager to help the United Way of Greater High Point, and for that, we are truly thankful,” says Bobby Smith, president of the United Way. “We have seen them answer our calls for contributions and community action on many occasions.”
