HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 6, 2013 – Students at High Point University recently worked to establish a new student chapter of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. The chapter, which already includes 22 members, makes HPU one of only two student chapters of the NSSA. The other student chapter is located at Syracuse University.
“What a great opportunity for our students to network with professionals in the field,” says faculty adviser, Dr. Bobby Hayes. “As one of the two student chapters in the country, this allows us to be on the ground floor of this exciting new partnership venture with the national professional organization.”
The NSSA is headquartered in Salisbury, N.C., and its membership consists of approximately 800 leading sportscasters and sportswriters from all over the country. Students benefit from the association by receiving feedback from these professionals on their resume material, interacting with speakers who are leaders in the sports media industry and attending the annual NSSA awards banquet.
In its first year on campus, the NSSA plans to host speakers from the field of sports media and participate in “Com Week” in April, giving one of the days during that week a particular sports media emphasis.
