HIGH POINT, N.C., March 7, 2013 – High Point University was honored with five awards from the United Way of Greater High Point at the organization’s annual celebration on March 6, including being named the city of High Point’s fourth largest contributor for the 2012 campaign.
HPU received the following distinctions: the Spirit of NC Award; Gold Status for Employee Campaign Award; the Eagle Award for leadership in giving; the Chairman’s Award for best practices; and the Outstanding Achievement Award for support that goes “above and beyond.”
HPU was one of only two universities in the state to receive the Spirit of NC Award in the category for Educational Leadership.
“HPU once again had an extraordinary United Way Campaign,” says Bobby Smith, president of the United Way of Greater High Point. “Winning the Spirit of NC award for the fourth time in five years shows their desire to give back. We congratulate and thank HPU on this remarkable accomplishment.”
The HPU United Way Campaign raised more than $185,000 – a 387 percent increase since 2005 and up from $166,000 in 2011. Approximately 80 percent of employees contributed, and the campaign was completed in less than 45 days.
In addition to the employee campaign, students, faculty and staff contribute more than 50,000 volunteer hours in the community and raise funds for community initiatives throughout the year. According to the United Way’s calculations, HPU’s 50,000 volunteer hours is valued at an impact of $1,089,500 in the community.
