Faculty Help Build a Home in High Point

06.29.2013

H4H Build Jenn BrandtSometimes a bucket of nails and a hammer builds a house. Sometimes it builds a home and a symbol of hope.

A group of High Point University faculty joined Habitat for Humanity of High Point, Archdale and Trinity recently to build a home for a family in the Washington Terrace subdivision. Ten faculty members worked on the homes, which is just a few miles away from HPU, by installing the roof, prepping window frames, h4H Build Dan Erbtaping exterior walls and moving equipment. The home is the 14th house to be built by H4H in the Washington Terrace subdivision since 2008.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the support of the community, and High Point University has been an integral part of our builds,” said Carmen Jackson, the Americorp Construction Crew Leader in charge of the build. “We’ve worked H4H Build Facultywith a lot of students, and having faculty come help was great. They took initiative, and we accomplished so much while they were here. They even cleaned up the work site, and that just made me happy.”

The project was organized by Tim Linker, director of HPU’s Office of Sponsored Projects. Faculty who participated included:

• Dr. Jennifer Brandt, director of women’s and gender studies
• Dr. Dan Erb, dean of the School of Health Sciences
• Dr. Daniel Hall, assistant professor of economics
• Dr. Eric Hegedus, founding chair of the department of physical therapy
• Dr. Laura Linker, assistant professor of English
• Tim Linker, director of the Office of Sponsored Projects
• Dr. Barbara Mallory, associate professor of education
• Dr. Virginia McDermott, associate professor of and associate dean of the School of Communication
• Allison Walker, instructor of English
• Dr. Alexis Wright, assistant professor of physical therapy

“Working with my colleagues to help build a house in High Point was a great experience,” said Hegedus. “I think it’s important that we get off campus and work together in the community, and the experience was made better because the Habitat crew was so knowledgeable and committed.”
