“Our university is blessed with philanthropic investors who believe in the institution’s values-based, holistic education. We are very grateful for the generosity of community leader Doug Witcher,” says Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU president. “Our graduates go on to do impactful things with their lives while continuing to support their alma mater, and Doug is a great example of that.”
Witcher has more than 30 years of experience in the insurance industry. He is the CEO of Smart Choice which was founded in 1994. The company has revolutionized the insurance industry and grown to become a major network which serves more than 3,700 agencies in 42 states. Witcher continues to provide leadership and vision that has guided the company since its inception.
In addition to his experience in the insurance industry, charitable giving is an integral part of both Witcher’s life and his company’s philosophy. He is the 2013 campaign chairman for the United Way of Greater High Point and has avidly supported many different events in the community. He currently serves on the following boards: HPU Board of Visitors; High Point Community Foundation; Family Service of the Piedmont; High Point Regional Hospital Foundation; Hospice of the Piedmont; Friends of the Arts at NC State; The Brotherhood of Saint Andrews at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church; and the High Point Chamber of Commerce.
Witcher’s gift marks another major gift for HPU this year, including a combined gift of $16 million from parents of current students for the Center for Student Success and a $10 million gift from Ron Wanek, CEO of Ashley Furniture.
