Following three No. 1 rankings from U.S. News and World Report, High Point University received yet another No. 1 rating on Thursday when the HPU men’s basketball team was picked No. 1 in the North Division of the Big South Conference at the league’s annual media day. The Panthers won their first-ever Big South regular-season championship last year and are predicted to repeat.

Redshirt-sophomore John Brown, of Jacksonville, Fla., was named the Big South Preseason Player of the Year and Allan Chaney was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team. HPU received 25 of a possible 30 first-place votes in the poll.

The No. 1 rankings have piled up for High Point University this year. HPU was named the No. 1 Best Regional College in the South, No. 1 Up and Coming School in Regional Colleges in the South and No. 1 for Best Undergraduate Teaching in Regional Colleges in the South.

The HPU men’s basketball team had its best season since joining NCAA Div. I a year ago. The Panthers went 12-4 in Big South play to win the Big South North Division and earned a trip to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, the team’s first postseason appearance. HPU went 17-14 overall.

The Panthers return all five starters from last year including Brown and Chaney. Brown was named Big South Freshman of the Year and became the second freshman ever named to the All-Big South first team last season. Chaney was an All-Big South second team selection and was named the CBSSports.com Comeback Player of the Year.

The men’s basketball team opens the season at UNC Greensboro on Nov. 8 at the Greensboro Coliseum. HPU students can sign up for a bus trip and free ticket to the game at HPU Campus Concierge. High Point hosts Bridgewater College in an exhibition game on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m.

The women’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the Big South Preseason Poll and redshirt-junior Stacia Robertson was selected to the All-Big South Preseason Team. Robertson averaged 12 points and 6.9 rebounds last year and will be tasked with leading a young squad with five newcomers. The team opens the season by hosting Newberry College on Nov. 9 at the Millis Center.
