American Children’s Home Visits High Point University

11.26.2013

HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 26, 2013 – Students, faculty and friends of High Point University got an early dose of Thanksgiving when they welcomed the American Children’s Home (ACH) to campus.

Kathy Berrier, vice president of business affairs for ACH, Craig Burris, ACH director of financial development, and foster care social workers presented the agency’s 85 year-old mission to the audience in Phillips Hall and provided a glimpse into the day-to-day principles and practices of the agencies.

ACH provides group home programs to children who were taken from their homes due to unstable conditions. The goal is to reunite the children with their families. ACH serves families and children from all 100 N.C. counties and provides long-term residential care, foster care support, emergency services and the Preparation for Adult Living (PAL) program.

“Every child wants a solid ground to stand on. We try to give them some of that ground,” said Burris.

“I think the subject of kids not having a home is not usually spoken of so many do not realize how prevalent it is in our society,” said freshman Ariel Hodges. “By hearing from the American Children’s Home I was able to learn about the ways I could get involved and be a part of such a great program.”

“This visit also made me want to get involved with these children/young adults,” added senior Savannah Bastecki.
