HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 30, 2014 – High Point University’s Quiz Bowl team brought home the Big South Conference Championship after defeating all eight universities they went up against. Greg Sensale, who specializes in history, politics and sports, placed first in overall points earned, and Matt Sarnelli, specializing in world history, geography, literature and religion, placed third overall.
The College Quiz Bowl is a competition between teams that covers an array of liberal arts subjects. Students prepare by sharpening their knowledge in their own areas of expertise. This year’s tournament had the most participants since the conference started holding a tournament in 2006.
“HPU’s team exhibited outstanding cooperation and camaraderie among themselves, and exemplary sportsmanship toward other teams,” says Dr. Jacob Waldenmaier, assistant professor of religion and philosophy at HPU and Quiz Bowl team coach. “Each student has different specializations which, when combined, became a force that swept the tournament and ended Liberty University’s four-year streak.”
“I am so grateful to HPU for giving me the opportunity to compete in Quiz Bowl competitions over my three years,” says Patti Suchan, the team captain. “HPU and the Honors Program have continued their support of the team and have encouraged me to explore my intellectual curiosity beyond by chosen course of study.”
The team of Suchan, Sensale, Sarnelli and David Friedman will also compete at the regional tournament, hosted by Virginia Tech, on Feb. 8.
