Updates for 3rd Annual Spring Dance Concert

HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 28, 2014 – High Point University’s growing dance minor program will have the opportunity to share and showcase the talents of students for the community at the third annual Spring Dance Concert. The event, to be held in the Hayworth Fine Arts Center, is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

Editor’s Note: Some dates and times originally announced for the concert have been rescheduled due to inclement weather. Below is the updated performance schedule.

Concert Dates and Times:

  • Feb. 15 – 7 :30 p.m.
  • Feb. 16 – 2 p.m.
  • Feb. 17 – 7:30 p.m.

The concert will include a collection of contemporary dance works choreographed by Cara Hagan, instructor of dance, adjunct professor Lindsey Howie and guest artist Tiffany Rhynard. Each piece, which will vary in style and theme, will be performed by students in the dance minor.

Hagan is choreographing two works – the first is a collaboration with Dr. Brad Barlow, assistant professor of astrophysics; the second is based on Picasso’s “Guernica.”

“The first work with Dr. Barlow includes choreographing the life cycle of a high mass star. Not only is he providing the scientific information we require to create the piece, but he’s also providing the music,” Hagan says. “The second piece, based on Picasso’s work, is quite a powerful piece; large and full of texture and movement. I had the pleasure of viewing this painting up close while in Spain during a Maymester with HPU students last year. It seems apropos to do the piece, as we are going to Spain again this May.”

The event will also showcase the program’s first dance for camera, Hagan says.

“Cinematographer Toby Shearer came to visit us in November, where we shot a section of a piece we did last year,” Hagan explains. “It’s great to see our dance program growing in big ways right before our eyes. In fact, this concert will feature our first graduating dance minor, Sierra Ewert, who will graduate in May. Several juniors in the dance minor program will participate, as well as many other students who have come to participate in the dance concert simply because they love to move and perform. We are excited to continue growing an audience for this art form within the HPU community and beyond.”
