Alexander Siegal (1)You may not be making plans for May 2015 yet, but students at High Point University are! HPU’s Office of Study Abroad is pleased to offer 16 Global Experience programs to 22 countries on six continents for undergraduate students in the New Year. These programs are short-term, faculty-led study abroad or study America courses, often referred to as ‘Maymesters.’ The courses provide students with hands-on experiences abroad, such as drawing on-site in Italy, participating in a Habitat for Humanity build in Romania or living with a host family in Chile. They also give faculty members the opportunity to add international experiences to a course they are teaching and create innovative ways to deliver content that will challenge students and bring courses to life.

Last May, nearly 200 students traveled the globe in 13 Maymester programs. Nineteen of them participated in the cross-cultural psychology course with 16 days of travel through six western European countries. Led by Dr. Kirsten Li-Barber and Dr. Chris Lootens, assistant professors of psychology at HPU, the course provided students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge of psychological theories and concepts to cultures other than their own. As they traveled through the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Italy students were required to complete various field experiences aimed at understanding cultural variations in aesthetics, language, social interaction patterns and relationships.

Ashley Hengerer“Psychologists have long recognized the importance of multicultural knowledge and sensitivity,” says Lootens. “This ‘Maymester’ course helps students think critically about the influence of culture and become more multiculturally competent.” In 2015, Dr. Jana Spain and Dr. David Bergen will take the cross-cultural psychology course to Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

2015 will take HPU students to five new locations: India, Nepal, Morocco, Portugal, and Romania. The application deadline for these programs is November 7, and we hope you’ll encourage your student to consider one of these programs. More information can be found on the Global Experience website. Students can contact the Office of Study Abroad at 336-841-9280 or to receive an application.

In addition, HPU is pleased to offer two programs open to parents, alumni and friends of the university. Professor Scott Raynor in the Department of Art and Graphic Design will be leading “Highlights of the Grand Tour,” a program that will focus on the art and architecture of Italy from May 31 to June 11. Dr. Marc Foster will be traveling with the HPU choirs on “An American Celebration of Music” to South Africa from May 11-26, a program that includes several days of safari in Kruger National Park. For more information on joining either of these programs, please connect with Kristen Hinchman in the Office of Study Abroad, Jill Thompson in the Office of Institutional Advancement, or visit the website of the Office of Institutional Advancement.
