HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 18, 2014 – Love, murder, comedy, intrigue. High Point University will soon offer the community a variety of programming in an upcoming Opera Scenes concert at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the Charles E. Hayworth Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.
Under the direction of Dr. Scott MacLeod, assistant professor of voice and co-chair of the HPU vocal division, students in MacLeod’s “MUS 1350: Opera Scenes” class will present a semi-staged program of excerpts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The concert will include scenes and arias from a variety of operas, including “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Don Giovanni,” “Cosí fan tutte,” “La clemenza di Tito” and “die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute).”
The concert will feature HPU students Ashley Russell, Leah Larson, Lauren Fitch, Madison Murphy, Laura Hutchins, Jay Card, Thomas Lyons and James Austin Porzenski.
“Mozart is widely regarded as one of the greatest opera composers in history,” says MacLeod. “For beginners and novices alike, this is a nice opportunity to get a small sampling of some of his greatest masterworks.”
Visitors are encouraged to enter campus through the welcome center at the intersection of Montlieu Avenue and Centennial Street. Public parking and shuttles will be available in the lot behind the Hayworth Fine Arts Center.
