In the past year, Heidi Fischer and her study abroad team have added a dozen new exchange programs in Chile, Denmark, Hong Kong, Belgium, South Korea and more. A new faculty-in-residence program in Paris, France, allows students to take semester-long classes abroad with an HPU professor. And as more and more international students see the value of studying at HPU, the campus population diversifies.
As study abroad director at HPU, Fischer guides the university’s growing international footprint. With more than 50 programs offered, Fischer advises the some 500 HPU students who pursue international experiences each year, and helps welcome to campus all the new faces who come from more than 30 different countries to study at HPU.
New Home in Cottrell Hall – Home of the Flanagan Center for Student Success
This year, Fischer finds herself leading HPU’s study abroad efforts in a new space that is inspiring, intentional and extraordinary: Cottrell Hall – home of the Flanagan Center for Student Success. She says she’s looking forward to her office’s future in the new space, and to furthering HPU’s mission to graduate students who will excel in today’s global economy.
The center is a central hub for students preparing for job interviews, seeking career opportunities, and looking for ways to diversify their skills, thanks to a $22 million donation from the parents of HPU students.
In addition to the Office of Study Abroad, the two-story, 43,000-square-foot structure is home to Career & Professional Development, the Center for Entrepreneurship, the Sales Training Center, Undergraduate Research and Creative Works, the Student Success Program and more.
The center’s unique design includes office spaces that reflect the modern workplace of Apple and Google, as well as corporate settings found in some of the world’s major financial institutions. It also includes conference and meeting space for executive education programs, a think tank for entrepreneurs and a two-story Starbucks. These details prepare students to excel in diverse environments that are ever-changing.
