HIGH POINT, N.C., April 14, 2016 – Kaitlin Thompson, a senior at High Point University, was honored today as the 2016 recipient of the Haverty Cup.
Thompson, a native of Asheboro, North Carolina, received $2,500 and her name engraved on the base of the Haverty Cup, which is on permanent display in the library of Norton Hall on HPU’s campus.
Thompson received the prestigious Celia Moh Scholarship in 2014. With a double major in home furnishings and marketing, Thompson is member of Kappa Delta Sorority, Order of Omega International Greek Leadership Honor Sorority and member of the Board of Stewards. Within the community, she has been active in Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont.
She has worked in various positions during her time at HPU. She has served as a marketing assistant and creative intern for Fine Furniture Design. She has also worked as a furniture market assistant for Stanley Furniture and Alden Parkes Company. Following graduation, she has accepted an e-commerce marketing position with Klaussner Furniture Company in Asheboro, the third largest supplier of home furnishings to the U.S. Market.
The Haverty Cup was established in 1988 by Rawson Haverty Sr. to honor annually the most outstanding home furnishings graduate of HPU. Haverty established the award to encourage students to pursue a career in the home furnishings industry. Steve G. Burdette, executive vice president of stores, and Scott T. Miles, vice president of stores for Havertys, presented Thompson with the award on campus.
“Kaitlin is a student who is passionate about a career in the home furnishings industry,” says Dr. Richard Bennington, professor of home furnishings at HPU. “Early on in her student career at HPU, she came to me and indicated that she wanted to be employed in the industry. She has sought out numerous opportunities to work during the furniture market and to intern with furnishings related companies. These companies have indicated that she has a work ethic and drive that will make her successful in the industry.”
