HPU’s Theatre and Dance Department Receives Top Ranking

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 27, 2018 – High Point University’s Department of Theatre and Dance in the David R. Hayworth College of Arts and Sciences has been named to the Top 25 Theatre Programs in the country for 2018-19 by OnStage Blog.

HPU theatre students rehearse for the upcoming show, “Men On Boats.” The show is the true(ish) history of an 1869 expedition, when a one-armed captain and a crew of insane yet loyal volunteers set out to chart the course of the Colorado River. “Men on Boats” will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 4-10 in the Empty Space Theatre.

HPU ranks number 14 in the country, highlighting the department’s commitment to hosting visiting professionals from the entertainment industry to teach workshops and to share their talents and experiences with the students. Since 2013, HPU’s theatre program also offers an exclusive and permanent relationship with the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company in Baltimore, Maryland, where students work during the summer. In the past four years, HPU students have been offered internships either as performers or in technical roles. Currently, Lauren Engler, HPU alumna, maintains a working relationship with CSC as stage manager or performer.

“This ranking is an affirmation of the hard work and dedication of the faculty and staff in providing our students with a quality education,” says Douglas Brown, HPU’s interim chair of the theatre and dance program. “We strive to equip our students with both job and life skills that prepare them to work not only in the theatre industry but other career paths as well.”

OnStage Blog promotes theatre by bringing insight into the industry. It has become one of the most read theatre websites in the world.
