HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 15, 2019 – High Point University will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day worship service at 11 a.m. on Jan. 21 in the Charles E. Hayworth Sr. Memorial Chapel. The service is open to the public. It also will be streamed live at www.highpoint.edu/live and www.facebook.com/HighPointU.
This annual chapel service celebrates the life and work of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and features noteworthy clergy and scholars from across the country. This year’s guest speaker is the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III. The worship service also will feature music led by HPU’s Genesis Gospel Choir.
Moss is the senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Recognized as one of the “12 Most Effective Preachers in the English-Speaking World” by Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary, he preaches a message of love and justice and calling attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice and economic inequality.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Moss is an honors graduate of Morehouse College. He earned a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School and a Doctor of Ministry from Chicago Theological Seminary. He has published a number of books, sermons, articles and poetry and is the founder of Unashamed Media Group, a justice centered, faith-based agency that produces and curates stories to inspire the heart and challenge the mind.
Moss is an ordained minister in the Progressive National Baptist Convention and the United Church of Christ. He is on the boards of Auburn Seminary and Faith-In-Place/Action Fund, and chaplain of the Children’s Defense Fund’s Samuel DeWitt Proctor Child Advocacy Conference. He is also a senior fellow in the Auburn Seniors Fellow Program.
Service attendees are encouraged to enter campus through the welcome center at University Parkway. Parking will be available behind Hayworth Fine Arts Center.
