HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 28, 2019 – High Point University will host thousands of visitors during Winter Family Weekend, Feb. 1-3. The annual event is a time for HPU students and families to experience together the university’s academic and cultural opportunities, as well as offerings throughout the city of High Point.
Each year, Winter Family Weekend produces a significant economic boost to the city and the greater Triad area. Last year’s event provided an estimated economic impact of more than $1.1 million, according to the High Point Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
Local businesses, including restaurants, shops and hotels, see an increase in traffic during HPU’s annual events and look forward to serving the families attending. The economic impact of the university, $500 million annually, is a vital source for businesses in the city.
“When we see parents and students come in, we strike up a conversation about High Point University and the city,” says Tim Carter, owner of Carter Brothers BBQ and Ribs. “We tell them HPU is a great university, that this is a great place to live, and that we’re helping look out for their kids.”
This year’s Winter Family Weekend festivities include a variety of interactive sessions led by faculty and presentations designed to inform and inspire HPU parents and family members. The weekend will include a Life Skills Update and Parent CEO Panel with HPU President Nido Qubein, athletic events, tours and other entertainment for registered guests.
“HPU families continue to be instrumental in HPU’s growth, and we know they make an impact on our city too,” says Erica Burroughs, director of family engagement at HPU. “In many other ways, they collaborate with us and invest their time, talents and resources into enriching the student experience, whether that’s through volunteering with the Parents Council, making an annual gift, or helping students in their internship or job search. It’s always a pleasure for them to visit with us and experience HPU as their sons and daughters do each day.”
HPU’s Winter Family Weekend is just one of many events that bring visitors to the city of High Point each year. In the coming months, thousands more visitors will come to campus for open houses, Presidential Scholarship Weekends, Innovation Summits, athletic events and Commencement. Annually, HPU welcomes more than 100,000 visitors for admissions, athletic, cultural and community events.
