HPU to Host Annual Veterans Day Celebration

Each year HPU students present a t-shirt and a blanket to veterans in attendance.


HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 10, 2019 – High Point University will honor hundreds of men and women who have served the nation during its ninth annual Veterans Day Celebration. The event will be held at 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, in the James H. and Jesse E. Millis Athletic and Convocation Center on campus.

The program will include a complimentary breakfast, a patriotic salute and will recognize students leading initiatives to support veterans. Veterans will also get a chance to take a photo with a bald eagle. Keeping with its yearly tradition, the university will pledge American flags to local nonprofits, schools and government buildings.

Col. Leon “Lee” Ellis, U.S. Air Force veteran, who served 25 years and flew 68 combat missions, with a majority over North Vietnam, will speak at this year’s celebration. In addition to his military achievements, Ellis is founder and president of Leadership Freedom® LLC, serving for more than 15 years as a nationally-recognized leadership consultant, author and expert presenter. Additionally, event attendees will hear from Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU president, and enjoy music from the North Carolina Brass Band and the HPU Chamber Singers.

HPU will honor hundreds of veterans during its annual Veterans Day Celebration

All veterans and guests are encouraged to park at Oak Hollow Mall, 921 Eastchester Drive. Shuttles will begin running from the parking lot at 7:30 a.m.

“High Point University is a God, family and country school, and we are honored to have the opportunity to pay tribute to veterans,” says Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU president. “These brave men and women are heroes who have secured for us the freedoms and liberties that we enjoy every day.”

Moreover, this year’s event will feature special guest, Cheslie Kryst, Miss USA 2019 and Miss North Carolina. Veterans in attendance will have the opportunity to meet and take photos with the full-time attorney and Charlotte native.

“I have many veterans in my family, and I appreciate High Point University’s tradition of honoring those who have served,” says Kryst. “I am looking forward to this event, which celebrates some of North Carolina’s finest.”

HPU’s celebration of veterans, which has grown significantly over the years, is supported by Ilderton Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Scott A. Tilley, CFA, BB&T, Scott and Stringfellow, River Landing at Sandy Ridge, and the Sheriff Family Veterans Awareness Endowment.
