Being able to be a part of the Bonner Program and working at the Community Writing Center has been an amazing experience. Not only was I a part of establishing the Community Writing Center, but on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-5:30, I have the opportunity to work with young elementary school children to create a fun after-school learning experience. We start off with a fun literacy activity, such as reading or writing a story, to get the kids focused and engaged, and then we break off into small groups for homework help. If the kids don’t have homework we continue with different learning activities. We want the CWC to be a place where children can really connect and begin to love school and learning. Being able to watch these kids grow and develop their writing and reading skills and knowing that I helped be a part of it is so rewarding.
As a math major and accounting minor, I get to use my skills to help the kids with their math homework, but the experience of working through the Bonner Program at the Community Writing Center has given me so many other skills that I will be able to take with me wherever I go. Being at the Community Writing Center, I have been a role model for the children and through that I have learned that I love to work with them and I want to continue to be that person that these children can look up to. I know that in the future I want to continue to work with organizations like this one, or be able to help a similar non-profit organization by using the math, accounting and leadership that I have gained here through HPU and the Bonner Program.
Our goal is to continue to grow the programs at the Community Writing Center and welcome new members of the community to be a part of it as well. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the center please feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
