The Bonner Leader Program

All About Alison Hansen

Hi! I’m Ali Hansen and I’m a senior from the small town of Hamilton in upstate New York. I’m majoring in math with an accounting minor. As a Bonner Leader, I work as a Program Coordinator for the Community Writing Center. At the center, I work with 6-12 kids ranging from Pre-K to 5th grade twice a week from 3:00-5:30. When the children arrive at the center, we start with a literacy activity, such as reading a story and discussing the moral, creating our own story, learning about poems and rhyming, or drawing pictures relating to a story we read. We want to make learning fun and really get the kids engaged.  Afterward, we provide homework help; the students with homework work one-on-one with a service learning tutor. If the students don’t have homework, we do additional literacy activities with them. My responsibilities include opening and closing the center, managing the volunteers, helping to facilitate the opening literacy activity and homework help, as well as working hands on with the children to help them become engaged in learning.

Working at the Community Writing Center has been amazing and life changing. It has taught me that I love to work with kids and I love to be a role model for them while helping them learn and grow. The experiences that I have been able to have being as Bonner Leader have opened my eyes and challenged me in ways I didn’t think I would be. I have learned important skills including patience, awareness, communication, and leadership abilities that I will be able to use in my future career.
