Dr. Richard D. Parker, Associate Professor of Business, also serves as the Chairman of the Department of Marketing in the Phillips School of Business at High Point University. He earned his B.A., MPA and Ph.D. from The University of Alabama and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His areas of specialization are tourism marketing, international marketing, Canadian studies, marketing communications and leadership communications. Some of his past research includes studies of Internet tourism marketing in Canada, the incorporation of Canadian Studies into international business programs, marketing communication efforts by small businesses, using film to enhance business education and the effectiveness of student consulting projects. He serves as an editorial review board member for three academic journals: the American Review of Canadian Studies, the American Journal of Entrepreneurship and the Journal of Tourism Research and Hospitality and has published in the Academy of Marketing Studies Journal, the Academy of Educational Leadership Journal, the Journal of Contemporary Business Issues, the Journal of Entrepreneurship Education, Entrepreneurial Executive, the Southern Journal of Canadian Studies, International Marketing Review, the Academy of Strategic Management Journal, the Journal of Organizational Culture, Communications and Conflict, the Journal of Organizational Leadership and Business, the Journal of Tourism Research and Hospitality, the American Review of Canadian Studies, and the Cambridge University Press journal Polar Record.

Dr. Parker has presented his research findings at conferences of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States, the Southern Association for Canadian Studies, the Society for Marketing Advances, the Small Business Institute, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, the Academy for Legal Studies in Business, the Indiana Canadian Studies Roundtable and the Hawaii International Conference on Business. Additionally, Dr. Parker has held workshops for the Academy of Business Education and the Southern Association for Canadian Studies.

Dr. Parker joined the HPU faculty in 2008 having previously taught at The University of Alabama, Western Kentucky University and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. From 2005-2009 he was active in curriculum development with the Laval University Summer Business School in Quebec City, Canada and in 2007 served as a faculty internship participant at Karl Franzens Universitat Graz in Austria. His recent teaching assignments include courses in international marketing, a special topics course in tourism marketing and communications for managers in the MBA program; additionally he has taught a variety of other courses including principles of marketing, sales development, sales management and marketing communications. He serves on the HPU Study Abroad and Communications committees and previously served on the HPU Honors and Global Studies committees.

From 2008 – 2011 Dr. Parker served as the president of the Southern Association for Canadian Studies. He is a life member of the United States Naval War College Foundation and an active member of the US Naval Institute, the North Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and the St. Andrews Society of North Carolina. Prior to his career in academia Dr. Parker worked for ten years in sales positions for companies such as Waldenbooks, Rich’s Department Stores and Parisian Department Stores. Following his career in sales, he spent five years as a customer education specialist for Sungard Employee Benefits Systems in Birmingham, Alabama. He also held the position of Director of Public Affairs for the Alabama Wing, Civil Air Patrol, US Air Force Auxiliary at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama where he earned a Commander’s Commendation Award and a Meritorious Service Award for outstanding work in public relations activities. In April 2013, Dr. Parker joined the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Public Affairs Officer attached to Navy Public Affairs Support Element – East based at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.

Dr. Richard Parker is the recipient of the 2013 Ruth Ridenhour Scholarly and Professional Achievement Award. The Ridenhour Achievement Award is given annually to a High Point University faculty member who has made exceptional contributions to his or her professional discipline through research and professional development.
