Dr. Peter Summers, Associate Professor of Economics, came to HPU in 2011 after working in Texas, Kansas, and Australia! He served as Assistant Professor of Economics at Texas Tech University and as a visiting scholar for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Prior to those appointments, he worked in Australia at the Melbourne Institute of the University of Melbourne, most recently as Associate Professor and Head of Macroeconomic Research. During his time in Australia he also served as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Adelaide.

His research interests include empirical macroeconomics, business cycles, time series econometrics, Bayesian econometrics, forecasting, and economic indicators. His works have been published in the Journal of Economics, the B. E. Journal of Macroeconomics, Economic Review, the Journal of Applied Econometrics, and Economics Letters, among others. Some of the titles include:

• What Caused the ‘Great Moderation’?

At HPU he has taught principles of microeconomics, principles of macroeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, money and banking, and a first year seminar on financial crises. He serves on the Phillips School of Business Assurance of Learning Evaluation Committee and the First-Year Seminars Committee.

Dr. Summers holds professional affiliations with the American Economic Association, the International Institute of Forecasters, and the Missouri Valley Economics Association.

Dr. Summers earned his Ph.D. in Economics, his M.S. in Mathematics, his M.A. in Urban & Regional Planning, and his B.A. in Communications all at the University of Iowa.
