|LILLIAN HILL WATSON|
Director of the Business Communications Program
Assistant Professor of the Practice of Business Communications and Business Law
Office: Plato S. Wilson Commerce Building 321
|Lillian Hill Watson, J.D., joined the Earl N. Phillips School of Business (PSB) in the fall of 2016 as an Assistant Professor of Business Communications and Business Law. She also serves as Director of the Business Communications Program. A Wake Forest University educated attorney, she came to academia after a distinguished legal career in business and bankruptcy law.
According to NACE (the National Association of Colleges and Employers), employers require people who can communicate clearly and concisely. A major goal of the PSB is to graduate business students who are not only excellent communicators, but also have the well-developed professional soft skills that employers are finding more and more important. The Business Communications and Professional Development course (BUA 2990) has always been a high priority initiative. As Director of the Business Communications Program, Lillian Watson will strengthen and further the development of this PSB initiative.
“I hope to get students excited about developing the communication skills that will be critical to their professional development and personal success in the fast paced and competitive global world they face. My goal at HPU is to work with faculty, staff, and community leaders to strengthen and expand the Business Communications curriculum and give HPU students a strong business communications base that they can build upon throughout their professional lives. In the Business Law course, I hope to join with current professors to help today’s students recognize areas of possible legal liability so they can fully analyze business opportunities and risks. An exciting aspect of this class is that students gain a deeper understanding of the issues underlying so many of today’s headlines.”
Ms. Watson is licensed and trained as an attorney and mediator. She practiced business law for 20 years as an associate, partner, and later, in the role of counsel. Ms. Watson entered academia as a professor with expertise in all forms of oral and written communications. Her private commercial law practice required the ability to effectively communicate and advocate with clients, opposing attorneys, accountants, business leaders, staff members, and other constituencies. She has taught business law and business communications to undergraduates, MBA students, CPA students, and online graduate students at Elon University, Guilford College, Becker Professional Education, and an online MBA Program. She enjoys interacting with students from all walks of life. At High Point University, Ms. Watson teaches the Business Communications and Professional Development class, with future plans to also teach the Business Law class. She serves on two key committees for the Phillips School of Business, the Strategic Planning Committee and the Assurance of Learning Committee.
Ms. Watson has peer reviewed for the Journal of Legal Studies in Business and for the Association for Business Communication, 2016 Annual Conference Proceedings.
