|Dr. Jim Wehrley, Dean of the Earl N. Phillips School of Business (PSB) and Associate Professor of Finance, joined HPU in 1994. His leadership abilities were soon recognized, and he was tapped for leadership roles first as Director of Business Administration, then Chair of the School of Business, and, in 2003, Dean of the Earl N. Phillips School of Business.
Before pursuing a career in academia, Dr. Wehrley worked as a commercial loan officer and as a financial statistician in Florida and Colorado. Dr. Wehrley holds professional affiliations with the Academy of Business Education, the Academy of Financial Services, the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education, the Financial Education Association, and the Society of Financial Service Professionals. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of the High Point Economic Development Corporation. Past and present service to HPU also includes the Strategic Planning Committee and the Tenure and Promotion Standards Committee.
During his tenure as Dean, Dr. Wehrley has been instrumental in steering the course of the PSB through curriculum changes, implementing innovative instructional techniques, introducing practical experiential learning situations, and providing opportunities for students to hone their job search skills. He cultivates and administers advisory boards comprised of local business professionals who provide insight into current business trends, suggest appropriate and relevant course content, and identify which attributes they find to be optimal in their employees and new hires.
Dr. Wehrley went the extra miles to earn 18 graduate hours each in finance, management, marketing, information systems, and statistics, respectively. It has equipped him with a depth and breadth of business knowledge and qualified him to be capable of teaching courses in any of those fields. He has received multiple teaching awards including the Meredith Clark Slane Distinguished Teaching / Service Award, the Alpha Chi Teaching Award, and the Exemplary Teacher Award presented by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church.
Dr. Wehrley earned his Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech), his MBA from Baylor University, and his Bachelor of Business Administration with a Major in Finance from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater.
